There have been a TON of gorgeous ladies in ‘Old Hollywood’, as well as a great many handsome fellows. There is one who always stood out for me somewhat… the grand actress Lauren Bacall. She did not have the body or the sex appeal of a Marilyn Monroe, mind you, but she had little need for it. The eyes, the eyebrows, their magnificent arch… this lady had ‘it’. Today’s young generation is quick to label celebrities a “Queen” and telling the world how this Queen ‘slays’, well Bacall truly was worthy of the title.
Also, the voice. Bacall always had, and always would maintain, an incredibly voice. It was somewhat deep, husky, and it fit with her face well. There was a sharpness to her face, her features, and her voice… and you could just tell she was smart as a whip. She aged well, too — seeing her in a movie with Barbra Streisand in the 1990s I was struck by that face and that voice once more. In a lot of ways this fine woman, widow of Humphrey Bogart, was ‘the last of an Era’.
I have a hard time picking ‘the most beautiful’ woman of Old Hollywood. There’s simply too many to choose from. But Lauren Bacall, to me, was the most striking. She had the It-Factor, and then some. Class personified.
